I've bought a bog standard "PSL-AICO" collapsible rubber lens hood and I'm
wondering what focal lengths it could be used for (with 35mm SLR cameras).
Hood fits 58mm lens, 33mm long, 74mm internal diameter at front.
I know there'd be vignetting problems with ultra-wide lenses and it would
be of limited/no use at long telephoto. I'm guessing 40 to 120mm would be
a reasonable. What do you think? A rough guide would be fine.
Also, on the vignetting subject, at what point do standard Hoya Skylight
filters become problematic for wide angles. Is 28mm ok? What are the
special slimline ones for?

You really have answered your own question.
the standard lens hood will likely vignette beyond 35mm and so special hoods
designed for the job are advised.
Most Hoya filters will work with up to 28mm in IME that's on a 28mm Nikkor
but wider like my 20mm needs the slimline for the obvious reasons.
Additionally slimmer filters allow for more than one to be added when using
wider angle lenses especially a polariser.

Thanks very much Duncan.
Any idea on the upper end of the range? At what point would the (rubber)
hood cease to be useful? My guess is 120mm. Is that about right?

I take it it's an SLR you're using? You can see the problems - at least you can
if they're bad enough. Dunno about the hood you're using but some 'pop' out for
longer lenses - push back for wide angle, iirc the limit on that is about 28mm.
