How long's a piece of string ?!

As a 'photo journalist' (well, Picture Editor actually), I have and use the
following lenses with my Nikon D1H bodies:-

Nikon 17-35mm F2.8 D
Nikon 35-70mm F2.8 D
Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 G VR (Vibration Reduction lens)
Nikon 300mm F2.8 AF AIS II
Nikon 600mm F4 AF AIS.

The most common 'long lens' you'll typically see is the 300mm F2.8 - this
becomes effectively a 450mm F2.8 due to the CCD size in the D1H.

At first glance, these lenses often look big simply due to the size of
their front elements. They tend to weigh a tonne, too - good for building
arm muscles....

Thank you for your reply
If you were to only have the choice of one lens. and god help you,  you
could not have any other, which one would you choose for your line of work

Probably the 70-200mm. It's got the widest range of any of the other lenses
- in 35mm terms it equates to a 105-300mm. That would allow me to cover
most things (though some with difficulty !) I do from day-to-day in my job.

The 17-35mm would also have to be a candidate, but would be effectively
useless for most sport and that would be a major downer.

I do love the 300mm F2.8 - it's a lovely lens, superbly balanced and razor
sharp with extremely good AF. However, as it's effectively a 450mm, it
would limit be heavily for most stuff other than sport.

So yes, it's the 70-200mm.
