I recently dropped my Fuji S5600. ( One year old from new)
Fortunately I have been able to recover the photos taken - using the cameras
download facility.
However the picture taking facility has died.
Should I consider finding a repair source or go for a replacement.
Many thanks

I'd be inclined to drop an email to Fuji Service, easy to deal with they
will give you an idea of cost or may offer a deal for a newer beastie. They
were very helpful when my Fuji developed a fault even tho it was US sourced.

Thanks for that, Derek.
I had failed to find that site on my initial search.
I will fill in the enquiry form thereon and see how we go.

Your home contents insurance, or possibly your business policy, may
well cover accidental damage.
It is worth looking at the policy documents to see what is or isn't
covered.

Thanks for the idea.
I think I am under some sort of excess but even if not,
I tend to treat insurance as only practical for use in major events.
I am now quoted the best part of £100 to get it fixed.
My dilemma now is whether to spend the money plus a bit more on an upgrade
or stick to my present repaired obsolete model.
I do have an A303 (Finepix) compact as a backup but that is not happy in low
light outdoor conditions.

When I finally parted with my Fuji 2800z I decided to go the compact route
a pocketable camera was my idea even in a Barbour the 2800 is bulky but I
still wanted the high zoom capability so I ended up with a Panasonic TZ2
pretty similar spec to s5600 and I have to say I'm very happy with it + it
has an auto backlight for low light levels very handy! I spotted some refurb
TZ2 on Amazon at under £100 +p&p and the Tz3 new is similarly quite cheap on
ebay but then so is a 5600 plenty of choice

"Plenty of Choice" - there is problem - perhaps too much !
I like the idea of this "backlight ".
Is it suitable for outdoor use - I spend a lot of time photographing
buildings and suchlike ?
Even on the 5600 the "auto"does not seem to adjust for low light conditions.
With the A303 forget any low light stuff i.m.e.

You're very welcome.
I also found a FujiFilm FinePix S5800 with 8 MP at £119.99 from ASDA:
http://tinyurl.com/3tbufd
It seems to sell at a lot of outlets in the £120 to £130 range, but
here's the real bargain, the same camera at Dixons Online for a mere
£85.00 including postage!
http://www.dixons.co.uk/product.php?sku=957401
It has to be a steal at that price.

Sorry. It was in stock when I found it. :-(
Best I can find in stock is here:

£99.98 including postage from Amazon UK, supplied by Pixmania (whose
own web site strangely quotes £106!).

Should be ok for outside work there is a gamma correction in the menu which
is handy if you are shooting outside into shadow to be fair there are far
more adjustments than I am ever likely to use I just preset for shutter
priority 'sports mode' and bump it up a couple of stops. the backlight is
not good in total darkness but when things are marginal it is very handy and
being dim I said TZ2 it is actually a TZ1 I'll be giving it an airing at
the Cheshire Gamefair this weekend provided it isn't flooded out. Does a
decent sunset as well YHM

What battery do you refer to ?
Fraid I just lug about vast quantities of Kodak AA's.
I have seen advertised somewhere that there is a newer form of AA under the
trade name of "Energiser" that
puts Kodak , Duracell etc to shame.
Anybody confirm this ?

Nothing special is needed, I'm using a uniross That cost £6.00. My first set
cost £7.95 at SVC when the first hit the market. Since then I have added Two
more set bought from Wilkinson at £5.95 a set. Now when my batteries run
down and I put the spear set in at least I find they are not run down too

Interestingly AA batteries feature in the latest Which mag. and Energiser
lithium get very favourably reported.
No mention of re-charging though, wondering why not.
They do feature a section on re-chargeable separately
So do I take it from your answer that I could recharge these on a Uniross
( or perhaps similar) charger ?

It has a rather good Lithium Ion battery which lasts for ages 30 or 40 shots
with flash dont make any impression on it at all ( or so the meter says) so
a couple of days landscape should be easy peasy

like the imaginative pricing? I can have one flown in from japan for less
that half that or buy 10 off ebay (plus postage) I see energiser do one as
well .

After mucho dithering on my part. "Which" mag showed up yesterday.
The Fuji S5800 scored the best of the bunch - Comet were recommended as
cheapest supplier
I took the plunge at £89.99 delivered.

I look forward to its arrival, with thanks to all those who participated in

There are plenty of Fuji S5600 cameras on eBay at around £80. I would
think that this could be a better option than having yours repaired.

When I looked at claiming for a new pair of glasses after dropping them I
found that the loss of no claims on the policy would cost more than the
claim. Made me wonder why I bothered with insurance.
I damaged my old camera and got some quotes for repair, I think around
£100. One company said that it was not worth that much so not worth
repairing but I went ahead (not with that company) because I had various
accessories for the camera which made it worth more to me. I find it
useful as a spare camera.

Being as they are £50 ish secondhand, it would surely be the most cost
effective to get a used one, or indeed, buy a newer, better model.

Thanks for that Alan.
I am now heading down the upgrade road.
As I mentioned before - there is so much choice out there.
