My daughter is looking at cameras and  am trying to help (interfere).
Whenever she spots one that seems interesting I take a look on the
manufacturers' web site to check the spec and to see if it is current. I am
amazed how often the model doesn't exist on the manufactures' web site. The
models must be slightly renumbered to make them unique to a chain of
stores - probably with a slightly reduced spec.

Any views? Would you buy a camera that isn't listed on the makers (UK)
web-site?

If we are talking about the reputable manufacturers then I don't think
the spec would be reduced. Sometimes the model number may be suffixed
with "B" for black or "S" for silver etc.

What cameras were you looking at?

Looks to be only available from Dixons group. So presumably same as some
other older Olympus that was discontinued and sold under a new name to
Dixons.

Beware of Olympus (and Nikon to some degree) as they tend to have
serious shutter lag.

Best buy if you can find one is a Canon Ixus 70 or a Fuji
F40fd/F45fd/F47fd (which are all the same camera but different
retailers - retai/Argos/DSG.) Don't get caught by the pixel race - 6Mp
is enough for anyone - it's the lens that matters.

Will 6mp print at a native A2 size?

When you say 'native' I assume you mean full frame?

A definite maybe - I've never tried going that big!

Having said that I printed a 1.5Mp at full frame on A4 and it looked
seriously good.

I've got a couple of my photos printed out A2 sized hanging on my lounge
wall. They look really good that size. They were shot with my 10mp 400D.
I'm not sure that you could get an A2 print from a 6mp shot without
blowing it up.

Anyway, what I was going to say was that although I'm not into megapixel
snobbery, I wouldn't want to buy anything that I couldn't get an A2
print from.

Having accidentally printed A4 from the folder of images for the web page
800 x 600 instead of the folder for prints using MS print wizard. I would
not worry about it. Might not be good enough for the critics at a Photo
Exhibition. But you would not be ashamed to show them
