Hi Everone, I use a Nikon D70s with an 18-70 Nikon zoom. I have been
hankering after a longish zoom and the above lens is much cheaper than the
Nikon equivalent. One is about £55 and the other £280. Is the Nikon so
much better or would I be paying for a name? I do realise the Nikon has
VR - is this the reason for the difference in price? Thanks in advance for
all information and advice.

I think you tend to get what you pay for. I don't know much about Nikon
lenses but www.photozone.de has a review of the Sigma 70-300mm (albeit
with the Canon mount) and the results were not spectacular. Having said
that, if you can pick one up for a meagre £55 pounds then go for it. Not
much to be lost at that price.

I use the same lens on my D60, and the resultsd are very good. Perhaps
not as good as with my Nikon prime lens but still very good for the
money.

Don't forget that 75-300 on a D70s is the equivalent of about 100-450 on
a film camera. Definitely a tripod job that one. Also remember that
since the dSLR is using a smaller part of the glass any imperfections
will show up accordingly.
If you must have a 75-300 look for a Nikon non-VR - I almost (I waited
too long making a decision) picked one up in Jessops in Canterbury for
£60.
I have a Sigma 28-200 APO which - unless it is bright enough to use f11
or smaller - is as soft as beggary. On the other hand the Sigma 55-200
that I have is pretty good - still not as good as the 55-200VR Nikon
that my daughter has though!
