I study economics in the University of Graz and I'm workin on a
project ragarding thge introduction of a small image processing
software right now. I have a lot of questions that are answered
normally by buing a market study. But we cannot afford professional
market researches, so I dare to ask here.

What do you mean? How many digital camera users that owe also a PC use
image editing software? What are the leading programs in the
prefessional area and in the private market? (I guess the  absolute
leading product is Photoshop cregarding professionals.) I also wonder
how many Photoshop copies Adobe has sold last year.

Do you know where I can gain numbers like that?

Best regards Christine

Well I don't mind telling you.. :-)
Both my wife and I own digital cameras, I have two
We use the following software on our laptop PCs

Wife: Olympus Master Software and Picasso
Me: Nikon Capture NX, Photoshop CS3, Sometimes Lightroom (but less and
less).

I am freelance, and my wife photographs as a hobby.

I suspect Adobe's press office will happily shout about how many
copies they have shipped.

Everyone I know uses photoshop, mostly CS3, a few still on CS2, we're
professionals and use CS3 on PC's.

As an (ex) professional marketing man, I am happy to answer your
questions (this is UK based group - is that important to your project?)
BUT unless this is the only way you are going to be marketing the final
product your results are going to be *very* skewed.

Newsgroups tend to be used by the longer term users of the Internet -
web-based group forums being the preferred medium for the younger/newer
users (most of whom, in my experience, have never heard of newsgroups!).

Then, of course, there are those who use neither newsgroups or forums -
and their usage of camera and or computers is likely to be completely
different, again. If this is a student project - then it may be
interesting, but not professional in its conclusions.

If it is a university project then you may be defrauding your customers,
if you base results on these responses.

Ask them.

Oh, it is a student project!  Apologies if I misunderstood.

Best wishes.
