I am looking for a good but very basic book about digital photography,
covering such basics as shutterspeed, exposure and ISO settings (how
to decide on same depending on light conditions, and how to set them)
and other pretty simple stuff one needs to get started properly with a
DSLR.
Any recommendations?

Look for anything of the type you need by Kodak or by John Hedgecoe.

Thanks for that.
I have found a couple of books off my own bat: one of the "for
dummies" series, which I have used for other purposes in the past and
found generally well written and useful, and another one called
"Understanding exposure" by Bryan Peterson.
Any thoughts on those?

There is a Collins Manual of Photography on sale in WHSmith branches
for £10 (reduced from £25) which might be just what you need.  It
covers all the basics and plenty of encouragement to be creative.

I would avoid anything written by John Hedgecoe unless you suffer from
chronic insomnia.

I found "The New Manual of Photography" very helpful as a simple primer
and stimulator when I moved from film to digital a few years ago. Not
boring but well constructed and practical.

Yes I do recall other articles by him in the past to be less than
inspiring. But I'd recommend the above to our enquirer.

Some newsgroup contributors appear to have confused
the meaning of "discussion" with "digression".

I would have recommended the Peterson. Also look for his "Learning to
see creatively," he suggests good habits.

Thank you to AW, Tony, Michael and Chris.
By now, I have ordered the two books I spotted.  I am also taking note
of the author you recommend, and will look at his book if the other
two don't suffice me.
Good to hear more good reviews about Peterson.
Thanks again,
