Does anyone know where I can get hold of a cheap 52-55mm Step Up filter
adapter ring wotsit without paying an additional thrice the price of the
ring for the postage - thanx

Jessops always used to stock them but haven't bought one for a while.

I tend to avoid the Chinese stuff, but at that sort of price you're not
risking much. :-) I did find some for £5.24 delivered from a UK
supplier after I posted that link.
