According to the bumf, it is. But it refers to EOS cameras, not G
series.
Please have a look at the link below, you won't regret it, if only for
the delightful language...

I note that it says that "the camera, other than describing, has not
guaranteed operation". :-)
It works absolutely great with mine on manual and the photo quality is
superb in low light, but I have to play around with the power level
myself. Which is fine, so long as I get in plenty of trial and error
and get it well in hand. And I'm having fun in so doing.
What I am wondering is: is there somethign I should do and am not
doing which explains why it doesn't work in TTL for me, or is it
simply that it cannot do TTL with a powershot G5?

My word! What wonderful language! :-)
Assuming you got the C version, I'd expect all the E-TTL features to work. I
have the Canon Speedlight 420EX and it is fully auto on the G7. The only
function that doesn't work on the G7 is the high speed sync, which makes sense
as it is only useful where you have a focal plane shutter.
It sounds as if you're missing out on a lot of functionality. How many pins
are there on the hot shoe connector? The camera has 5. Does the auto-zoom work
on the flash? It should zoom along with the camera lens.

There are 5 contacts on the hot shoe and 5 contacts on the flash
foot. I can hear some noise from the flash when I zoom - but the
camera optical zoom is only 4 x, so I have mostly tried the flash
without zooming so far. I'll play around with it some more in
different conditions, and see whether I am simply doing something
wrong.

The only other thing is to really make sure it is properly slotted into the
hotshoe. I know it sounds obvious but I've often not fully slotted it in and
wondered why the auto functions disappeared. The Canon flash needs a hefty
push to get it fully in.
