additional flash light compatible with Canon G5?

I hope I am in the right place...

I bought a Canon G5 a few years back, and love it to bits, being a
total amateur who just likes to take a few pics without sweating too
much about the technicalities...
However, the camera's built in flash is poor enough indoors, and I
would like to invest in a good additional flash light which allows me
to take good pics indoors at night, say at weddings and other such
do's.
Can someone suggest a good compatible flash which reloads reasonably
fast and is sufficiently powerful?
Many thanks in advance!

not make it clear what Canon flash lights are compatible with G5s)

I don't know the G5 intimately, but I think, if it has a hotshoe on,
then any Canon Speedlight system flash will be right. Do you have a hot
shoe, as the G7 does, with 1 large central contact and 4 smaller ones
behind it? I use a Speedlight 420EX with the G7. Only problem is it's
bigger and heavier than the camera.

Thanks for your reply, Richard.
Yes I have a hotshoe, with the contacts as you describe.  Does the
Speedlight 420 EX take a long time to reload between shots?  And is
there a fast flash which is powerful, yet light ?
Thanks again,

No doubt there are features that work with the flash gun to control its
range and duration. These will only work with a compatible flash gun But
Metz Sigma And sunpak also make flash guns that work with canon as well as
Canon some fully others with limited control

Thank you very much, Trev and Richard.  I think I will do a little
more research re. price with all brands named above.

Depends on how much flash is used. With a system flash, if you're
photographing somebody quite close, the flash will not discharge very
much so will be instantly ready for another shot. If you're
photographing something 50m away at night, then it'll have to recharge
fully, but this takes only 10-20s.

In my experience the Speedlight is much much faster to recharge than the
built-in flash, not to mention infinitely better at illuminating a shot
without the usual flash shine, shadows and general nastiness.

Oh, and zooms automatically with the camera too.
