and as suggested I went and did some research. Not exactly liked, is it?

It seems an awful lot of money to pay for a camera that is basically not
very good at all!

So after a year of using my trusty Nikon D50, I'm now looking for
something to move up a step. Whilst the D80 or D200 may be the logical
next port of call, I must admit I'm somewhat intrigued with the Fuji S3
Pro or even the S5. So yes I am making the effort to read the reviews,
but does anyone here have any opinions on the big Fujis?

My first ever >£200 camera was a Fuji S5500 (still got it and still love
using it as a snapper/lender) so it's not a brand I am averse to.

Opinions gratefully received.

If you want extended dynamic range, e.g. landscapes with sunlit &
shadow areas, or weddings with white dresses & black suits, without
messing about with multiple exposure HDR techniques, go for the Fuji
S5.  In extended dynamic range mode, it has about 9 stops.

If you want fast action shots, at medium - fast burst frame rates, go
for the D200.

The S5 is designed to do a specific job well.  If that's the job you
want, you'll be very happy.  If you want something more general, you
probably want something else.

I've done some more research and it looks like the Fuji may not be ideal
for what I do. I'll probably spring for a Nikon again, although it was a
useful exercise looking into the S5 and S3 purely out of interest.

That "wedding" expression does seem to turn up a lot when discussing the
Fujis.

Now it's just a case of deciding if the D200 warrants the premium over
the D80.

No one will (or should) do your research, on what specificaly YOU want, for
you.
I did MY research with MY parameters and decided on the 80.

I am not asking for research. If you had bothered to actually read it, I
am asking for opinions from real people who may have something worth
saying.

Thank you for a totally useless reply, confirming the general unhelpful
tone which drives people away from groups like this. Are you a traffic
warden by any chance?

You asked for comments on whether the "200 warrants the premium over the
80".
My answer still stands exactly as it was stated.
If you had bothered to actually read it, you might have gained some insight
on the decision processes that real people use to, um..., decide on stuff...
"Warrants" implies subjectivity. My answer remains as was.
The 200 and the 80 are different animals. Only YOU can make the intelligent
choice, for YOU.
As to the "Thank you for a totally useless reply...", well, did you notice,
it was the ONLY reply.
Might that mean something??
No, I'm an MSc Mechanical Engineer for some 30+ years now and I know how
distill my wants and how to go about finding out about things, the LAST
avenue of which is usenet user's opinions.
Cheers, George

Maybe he wanted answers like "I thought feature X was great when I
bought it, but I never use it", "I wish I'd bought something that did
Y", "the batteries in P last much longer than the batteries in Q, which
is more important to me than R, S, T", "A feels plasticky, but it seems
to survive knocks just as well as B which is much heavier"  ...

Having said that, the first result in a Google search for
nikon d200 d80
is http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d80/vs-d200.htm which seems to cover
everything pretty comprehensively.

Except then he goes and spoils it all by suggesting he gets better use
from a D40:  http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm
