Hi all, I already have a Canon EOS 500 and a Polaroid pocket Digital
camera. I have tried everywhich way with the polaroid to get really
close pictures of the small items I sell on ebay such coins, trinkets,
watches, postcards etc.
I can scan some things but not all.
I dont want to use the Canon as the print and dev costs are too high
for this type of work.
Could anyone recommend a digital zoom camera that would take lovely
close up , fine detail photos of such items that would look good on
Ebay to a potential buyer? I am not after a Rolls Royce model...just
fit for the job in hand. I see some beautiful close, detaled photos on
Ebay af coins , rings etc and I am trying to replicate that on a
budget if possible.
If it was a decent allround camera too then even better...... but its
the close up I am after. I have the Canon for all round general photos
and am very happy with it
Thanks for reading
Your thought would be appreciated
Regards alan

I can only surmise that the Polaroid you have does not have a macro mode.
In my experience, any digital compact camera with a macro mode should far
exceed the requirements for eBay pictures.
FYI my old Nikon Coolpix 4300 and my new Canon Powershot G7 will focus
perfectly down to less than 1cm (1/3 inch) from the lens. The difficulty, as
with all macrophotography, is getting sufficient even lighting, and that is
true no matter which camera you buy.
For your purposes, I'd say whatever you can buy for around the £100 ($160)
mark will suffice as long as it has a macro/close-up mode.
Just try a couple of budget models out in the shop.

Or you could try a dioptre.

I bought a Ricoh Caplio R5 for my wife. That gets down to 1cm in macro mode
and easily gets close enough for coins etc. The quality is pretty good as
well.
You could also try putting a supplementary close up lens in front of the
polaroid's lens. In fact, if you want to get really close, try putting a
camera lens in front of it.
Do a search for coin photography. There's a lot of info about.
I found this:

You could buy my Pentax Optio S4i which I've just put on ebay. It has a two
levels of macro and can get very close.
