The Reid - 11 Jan 2007 16:27 GMT As I use a telephoto in the great outdoors it seems the K10D would be an improvement on my *ist, given its 10 Mpixels, anti shake and anti splash seals + other nice features. I dont suppose anyone can suggest a reason I shouldnt load my credit card with even more debt?

Had you stated what you need in a camera, and asked whether the Pentax K10D would fulfil those needs, you might have received some good advice. But don't be surprised that, in the absence of any information as to what you might need it for, or expect it to do, no-one here cares whether you buy it or not.

Still, a lot of photo companies would go out of business but for people like you.

OK, lets start again for your benefit. I'm doing more wildlife than previously, in addition to the usual landscape. (hence the "great outdoors" reference) i'll be using a telephoto a lot more (hence telephoto reference). Now perhaps you tell me why anti shake, the vary "film" speed programme and 10Mpixels rather than 6 and other features are a waste of money for me?
I dont actually want to know of course, I just wanted any bad vibes that were about or news of new models (I'm not that interested in cameras and dont keep up to date, you see, i'm just interested in photography).
>Still, a lot of photo companies would go out of business but for >people like you. You dont know what sort of people I am.

My simple old auto > nothing film camera is half the size and much less for weather > to damage. Keep that for backup then. The LX has very good weather sealing, other Pentax film cameras do OK in the wet - neither better nor worse than anyone else's - which is better than _most_ digitals.
I would _expect_ the K10D to be similarly good at keeping out the water as the LX, but of course it'll be likely to stop working more completely and probably more quickly if water ever does get into it. Take a shower cap or similar to protect it when in actual rain.

Yes, I'm hoping they have done an LX job and less hopefully suspect water and digital hate each other even more than film cameras. For serious hill days I take film as the old camera is much smaller, less likely to fail and I suppose now expendable. I rarely actually take shots in the rain but the inside of the rucksack can be pretty damp on a bad day. One + for digital is not changing film in blizzards, although since I had digital I've not had any real winter weather.

Yep, I'm wondering if this country doesn't 'do' real winters anymore. Just wet and increasingly windy ones. Something else to thank our hydrocarbon addiction for...
I see that the new DA* lenses announced last year are also supposed to be sealed against the elements.

>I see that the new DA* lenses announced last year are also supposed to be >sealed against the elements. Useful. Sadly cameras seem to have to be designed to have hundreds of features rather than the sort of things outdoor users want, weatherproof, small, light. I'd like a camera system weatherproofed like GPS units or my old "weathercam" which I took a lot of very low quality but highly atmospheric wild weather mountain footage on.

I wasnt expecting a lot of replies, silence was fine, unless it was well known the camera was a dud. Which it seems it isnt. Loads of people posting "dunno" would have been odd :-) I'm looking forward to using the set aperture, set shutter, vary film speed program. And the 500mm lens I ordered too, christ, the CC bills!
I suspect someone might have read "thought not :-(" as "nobody replied :-(" as opposed to:- "bugger, i'll have to buy it then :-("

A lot seem nearer £3000.
In fact I just went and added it to my Amazon wish list!

Actually it was the fact that the 500mm f4.5 is quite an old lens and I didn't think it was still in production that made me wonder. It's manual focus too, though you might not mind that (I wouldn't.)
The 600mm f4 is a wonderful lens - but it weighs a ton, and costs a ton of cash too...

>It's manual focus too, though you might not mind that (I wouldn't.) I wasn't an autofocus fan till I got it when I went digital, for wildlife I think I prefer it so far, mostly I do landscape so its irrelevant. I just hate lenses where you cant read the hyperfocal point on the barrel.
>The 600mm f4 is a wonderful lens - but it weighs a ton, and costs a ton of >cash too... I just read luminous landscape on the 500+ F4s. The reviewer said he found the biggest ones just too heavy* and I certainly cant justify the cost. Even the 170-500 is twice the length of my longest current lens! Maybe if there was a compromise, a 500 F5.6 or better non zoom at quality between the two, at say £900 I would be tempted if I get into this area more. Perhaps there is?
*however, when I was last in the Shetlands a chap was using one hand held and seemed quite happy, didnt see the results though.

[quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > zoom at quality between the two, at say £900 I would be tempted if > I get into this area more. Perhaps there is? There is an A* 600mm f5.6 EDIF that was made up till 2000 which should be a better lens than the 500mm f4.5, but I know nothing about cost or availability - or, indeed, whether it has the DoF scale that you need (not that there is much DoF at all with a 600mm).
If I could have either lens, and cost wasn't a factor, I'd have the 600 just because I've seen how much more contrast the newer Pentax ED long lenses have compared to earlier long glass. I wouldn't refuse the 500 if one fell in my lap though.
There is a even a K 400-600mm f8-12 reflex zoom. This is a very high quality lens, despite its weirdness - but probably much too slow for what you want.
> *however, when I was last in the Shetlands a chap was using one > hand held and seemed quite happy, didnt see the results though. The 500mm f4.5 weighs nearly 3.4kg, the 600mm f5.6 is about 3.3kg, and the 600mm f4 is a whopping 6.8kg. I could imagine using the former two handheld, but not the 600/4 - it's good on a monopod or bean-bag though. I use a Wimberley Side-kick with my big lenses.
