Don't expect lightning fast action (i.e. shutter lag) in that price
area, but any of the Olympus' won't let you down. Casio and any of the
older Nikons are also good.

Avoid any make that is not normally associated with the photo world -
like Samsung and Acer - although Panasonic have been manufacturing and
badge-marketing for decades, and Sony are quite good too.

I looked at the Nikon L2, Canon A530 and Sony DSC S600

Of the three the Sony seemed most suitable for my daughter mainly due to
the compact size, viewfinder and the fact that she can use the memory
card from her phone.

Memory cards are pretty cheap, and the phone one may be rather titchy.

The problem may come when the camera is <here>, and the phone is not.

or vice versa.

As someone else said, they are cheap enough.  Though in my daughter's
case where she is, so is her phone...

This is like asking for recommendations for
the best new car under £4000.

Not any more it isn't.  Click through to Digital Cameras on
www.amazon.co.uk

Plenty of perfectly competent digital cameras there for well under
£100.

As I said, I've bought the Sony DSC S600.  6mp, optical viewfinder,3:1
optical zoom. As fine a little p&s camera as you could wish for.  I'm
seriously thinking of getting one for myself.

Perfectly competent?  Nonsense.

They are all afflicted by extreme noise, very limited dynamic range
(blown highlights *and* shadows - quite an achievement at the same
time), gross over-sharpening of JPEG files (and no RAW option so you
can avoid it), woefully unsharp lenses with small maximum apertures,
meaning lots of camera shake, and more chromatic aberration than
anyone with reasonable eyesight should have to tolerate.

Apart from all that, they are *just fine*.

;-)

Indeed.  Apart from that, they produce very acceptable snapshots :-)
In fact, many are a lot better than you suggest, from the results I've
seen.  I really think you should re-examine the market.  It moves
fast.

I do, all the time.  It is my job.  ;-)

Now if people would only set a budget of £150, there are some very
competent cameras around ...

But an extra 50 would cost me £150 - I have three kids.

So what's wrong with the Sony then?  I haven't really put it through
it's paces but I'm sure it will do nicely for my daughter.

I am sure it will be just fine.  All that matters is that your
daughter is happy with it, and so are you.

A very happy Christmas to you both.
