I'm still working on my site but have found UK hosts very expensive for
storage space and bandwidth.
I've been looking for a better deal and have only found them in the US,
godaddy.com 200 Gb space/2000GB Bandwidth for around $12 pm. I'm hesitant as
I lost a domain with a foreign host and wondered if anyone had a home grown
solution?
TIA Duncan

You are REALL REALLY missed in demon.local. You know, that's the group
you're too scared to post to these days. The group you ruined, remember?
Maybe all those long, hot days of plate licking have ruined your memory.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions but godaddy still beats what's on
offer from elsewhere.

adsl from an isp that will give you ip numbers and unlimited uploading, eg
Andrews & Arnold, http://aa.nu
A personal computer on your desk / in your den / under the stairs
A webserver on your personal computer eg Apache, http://apache.org
As you already need adsl and a computer and apache is free, you get
unlimited space and bandwidth for nothing.
Speed might be too slow for you. Try http://photo.clifford.ac to see how
my sluggish site performs. (A&A have the option to purchase a faster
upload speed)
On the other hand, $12 is not a lot of money. Do your really need all
that bandwidth?

There is also a password autoresponder but, unless this a very
old message, a "tuna" will swim right through. )

One thing you could do is put some of your images on a free image site to
save on your own bandwidth. Depending on the site it's usually possible to
embed such external images in your webpages. You need to check their terms
re copyright though (in case they help themselves to reusing your files),
also the files will expire from their servers if not viewed for a few
months. I've used imageshack.us and imagevenue.com in this way without a
problem, at least for modestly sized images (they tend not to allow linking
to really big stuff I think, but I've done it up to about 1024x768 at
least).
There are also various other free sites e.g. for blogging which give
filespace and allow external linking to files, I have a free blog that came
with 300MB of file space, I've successfully linked to files from offsite,
but as their servers are a bit slow I wouldn't use it as a main image
source (and indeed if a lot of people started doing this they would
probably wise up and block external linking).

I use a US service as well. If you wish, mail me at flyingrat @
gmail.com and I'll send you the link with an introductory discount
voucher code (I won't post it here as it could be construed as spam).
It's a similar deal and includes a free domain. Space and bandwidth are
slightly greater.
