jesus, hunting for the right digital camera has been a pain in the **rse. im
ready to just give up. it seems that every photo store - online or on the
high street, is just trying to flog me the most expensive bit of kit they
have, and therefore, reccomend the most expensive.
i want a 5megapixel jobbie that does all the normal things a digital camera
does, nothing flashy or too proffessional. i would also like one with a
decent flash - or even a hot shoe.
i dont trust the salesmen one bit, i was told the sony dsc-p10 was a decent
bit of kit in one shop, then told by another salesman that sony are only
good for tv`s and camcorders - not digital cameras.
i wrote to a couple of camera newsgroups have got no reply.
i got around 450 euro to spend, (315 squid)
can anyone give me any advice, my baby is growing quickly (as they do) and
i want to make a decision soon.
thanx in advance.

Oh come on! You don't go to salespeople or online camera stores for good
advice on what to buy. Have a look at dedicated digital photography review
sites like www.dpreview.com and make up your own mind. There's plenty of
good digital gear out there. Read the reviews and decide.

well i didnt know about that site, every time i typed in " digital camera
reviews" i got a bunch of online stores etc.
the site you put me on to was excellent and found that the sony p10 looks
like a good choice for my price range, there was, however one thing weird, i
was told by someone that i may want to go for the sony p12 - which wasnt on
their site. anyone know the difference between the p10 and the p12?
they both have 5 megapixels and i cant spot any major differences from what
ive been able to find.
cheers

The P10 is silver, the p12 is blue. I'm not sure if the P12 comes with a
case or not (my P10 didn't). I have a P10, I'm very happy with it. I'd have
bought a P12 but
couldn't find one at the time.
The P10 is great for family photography. It's small, battery life is great.
Memory a little expensive. I've taken lots of video clips (need lots of
memory for that). In low light it can be a litle grainy.
Very happy with the purchase.

A couple of clicks on the Sony UK website reveals the only difference
is packaging...see
http://products.sony.co.uk/thumbnails.asp?id=8_60_
DSPC12 is a "Special edition version of DSCP10 with dark blue finish,
exclusive leather case and 2 x NPFC11 batteries"

Look through the reviews at places like www.dpreview.com and ask any
questions in the appropriate forum for any that interest you.
Then you can go to the shops (or an online retailer) and state simply "I
want a.....". Now all you need from them is the opportunity (if in a
real shop) to handle the camera to make sure it feels comfortable to
you. If they try to give you the hard sell on something else, walk away.
It's your money.

www.steves-digicams.com is another good one, with very detailed
descriptions and pictures.

All of the Sonys are pretty good cameras in their price range, and are
well made. I have a DSC-V1 which is a bit above your stated budget but
is a superb camera, if you decided to spend more.

Buy an Olympus C4000Z from here for ?239:
http://www.digital-cameras.com/shop/showproduct.asp?id=529
Make sure you also get a 128Mb Smartmedia card for ?26 to go with it. Also
8 high-capacity NiMH rechargeable AA batteries and a charger. The charger
should be an "intelligent" one that charges quickly (probably advertised as
2 or 3 hours) not a timed 5 to 15 hour job.
Then you're all set for under ?300. The C4000 takes lovely pictures in low
light (which is good for babies). It is both easy to use and flexible. It
has a fast lens and it is excellent value for money. Flash is OK but there
isn't a hotshoe (although there is a flash socket). It is 4.something
megapixels but they are good ones and it is certainly capable of producing
nice A4/8x10 prints. If you would like to spend about ?400 you can get its
big brother the C5050 which has a faster lens and a hotshoe and a hotshoe.
But the C4000 is excellent value at this price.
Best of luck with the new baby,
Andrew
