Camera phone

Just had a new phone, Sony Ericsson Walkman phone.  It has as 2
megapixel camera

I must say the results are impressive.  Damn hard to use in daylight
though and composition is a bit of a hit and miss affair.  There is also
quite a bit of luck involved in getting a well focussed image. However,I
particularly like the macro.

Apart from cropping, resizing and a bit of sharpening, no other
processing has been done.

Very good stuff, better than my Coolpix 4500 I'd say.

The only reason I'm contempating upgrading my phone is for a camera, and
on the strength of the above I'd say it's just got even more tempting
;0).

We probably have the same camera.  My W800i gives excellent results.

There is a new model with anti-shake which should help in low light.

Yes, I think that's it.  It has an orange case.

For some time I have been looking for an easily portable digital
camera that gives adequate results for newspaper publication.  I need
it to replace my Contax T3 which is becoming unreliable and, being a
film camera, is sometimes slow to produce finished shots unless I am
near a minilab.

The W800i is pretty close to that ideal.  The W810i is perhaps a
little closer.  Give me 4 or 5 MP in a similar package and I will be
happy.

It almost sounds like the manufacturers are trying to produce
'semi-professional' camera phones for journalistic work ?

I'd presumed they were all crap.

Camera phones or Journalists :¬)

Newsprint does not need the highest res. About the same as the web or TV.

I wouldn't describe them as semi-professional, not by a long way.  But
they are also a long way from being crap.  And they have huge
advantages over digital cameras when you want to send a shot to a
picture desk.

I'm well happy with the pics, especially the macro facility.

Worst thing for me is the lack of a viewfinder.  In bright light the
screen is practically unusable.

That's very good.  But why only 640 x 480 when the camera has 2 MP?

Are all the other shots in /test/ taken with the Sony?  They are all
good shots, but all are only 640 x 480.

Agreed.  It's a limitation of many point and shoot cameras too.

Erm, it's not.  keys.jpg is 1632 x 1224.  In fact they all are.

Is your browser resizing them?

Yes they were all taken with the Sony.

Ah...penny drops.  You were looking at the root of the folder.   The
gallery software creates thumbs and main images of whatever is in the
folder.

Of those images the keys shot,
http://www.walkingoutdoors.co.uk/Geoff/test/DSC00116.JPG
and
http://www.walkingoutdoors.co.uk/Geoff/test/grass.jpg
are from the phone.  The rest are from my mate's Lumix and are just
there to test the gallery software.

http://www.walkingoutdoors.co.uk/Geoff/phonepicsoriginal/ also has some
original camera images.  I just need some good weather now to see what
it will really do.

Some superb images there, Geoff.  I'm seriously impressed with what
these phones can do.  I'm very happy with mine.  The Walkman MP3
player and the FM radio are also excellent features.
