A relative wants a stand-alone (i.e. not PC- connected) photo printer
for use with their digital camera, for Christmas Budget GBP 100-150 .

Any advice/ recommendations pointers to FAQs/ comparisons, please? I'm
concerned about ongoing costs of paper and ink; as well as usability.

What do 100+ models have over the Lexmark P4330 or P4350 at 69.99 (Argos
WH Smith, etc.)?

Cheaper ink, potentially.

A friend of mine had a Lexmark all in one - when the ink ran out, the
cost for 2 new ink cartridges was something like 70 UKP :-(

I don't believe this story. There is no way you have friends.

I don't know much about standalone printers Andy, but I have an old
Epson C60 that I refill with Printrite ink which costs about £4 for both
colour and black and white. That's for the pair, not each.  And the
results are excellent /on the right paper/[1]. Just need to find a good
cheap source of that.

For a new printer, you may have warranty issues with other ink, or
alternatives may not be available.

I bought a Lexmark and never will again. Good results, *but* awesomely
expensive cartridges, almost certainly because its much more difficult IME to
buy OEM cartridges for Lexmark, compared to Canon and Epson. Even if you
wouldnt buy OEM cartridges, the prices of the manufacturers own are
influenced by their availability.

Undoubtedly the Epson R300 at around £80 from Expensive World and
others. I have the R200 (which does not have card slots) and it
produces superb results.
