Is there a programme that will allow me to have a camera connected to the
computer so that any picture taken will go directly into a database or a
spreadsheet - bypassing any image editing software...?

What camera do you have ?

This kind of thing tends to be camera-specific - for instance, I can do
it with Nikon Capture and my Nikon D1Hs.
