[COMM] I will buy or licence your digital images

I am starting a web site in the UK offering large format printing services
to consumers - primarily it will consist of stock images bought from online
store as well as allowing customers to upload their own images to be
printed.

As an extension, however, I would also like to be able to offer images which
are unique to my site and cant be bought elsewhere which is where this
request comes from. I am looking for photographers (amateur and
professional) who are interested in either selling the complete rights to
some of their images or getting a licence fee from each sale. The main areas
I am interested in is abstracts, natural history, landscapes, skylines and
possibly sports but this list is not exhaustive - I am in the market for
anything really but I see the above as being the ones with most demand for
poster prints etc. The only stipulation I make is that the images must be
well shot and lit (obviously!), must be digital and must be at least at 5MP
quality (but preferably higher) so I can print it at least A3 size without
losing quality. Although the store is in the UK I am looking for
photographers from all over the world.

As this is a new start business I genuinely dont know how much I am willing
to pay for images - I would like to be able to develop ongoing relationships
with a number of photographers and am open to negotiations. If you are
interested but feel you cant trust me yet then Im happy to buy the first
batch of images outright and then talk about licencing future images and I
genuinely think thats going to be a better way of you making some money!
Please be aware you will have to sign a contract for every single image
before getting paid so please make sure the image is YOURS and you have the
right to be selling it before getting in touch!

Anyone who is seriously interested please drop me an email with some sample
pics (please watermark the pics and RESIZE them down to say 640x480 for
emailing) and an idea of prices if you have a view on their worth and we can
talk some more. The site is due to launch in mid November so this is
something I am keen to move on quite quickly and I have cash waiting for the
right photographers and pictures.

Thanks

Jason

If you have any ideas of the types of imagery you are interested in, in
terms of subjects or styles, then this might help people know whether
they have anything suitable.

It does say Simon although I do tend to waffle a bit once I get going - I
have quoted the main sections below to answer this specific question!

I'm interested, and have emailed Jason but I wondered if those who have
experience of selling their images could give some advice about what's a
fair sum both for selling rights outright, and for licensing.  It's
refreshing on this ng to see someone who wants images they're prepared to
pay for, eh?

Eh? What? Do they mean us?

I hope I, personally, have redeemed myself. I recently paid for some images
and sent free spectacles to everybody who asked.

Damn... now I'm wishing I'd asked :)

No, I didn't mean you, btw.  It's something that comes up frequently here.
There's always someone who thinks the time and effort photographers put into
learning and practicing their craft should be given away for free to make
someone else money.  If it was that easy they'd do it themselves, wouldn't
they?

He did that.  Very nice they are too.

Rick,

I have just bought some specs off you as a result of your earlier
thread.

Which of the images on your website did you pay for? I confess I gave
up and left the choice to you due to my strong prescription. I thought
that the thumbnails were OK but the full size pics left something to
wish for.

Hi,
I paid for the ones which have been taken front on.
such as...
http://www.justrimless.com/catalog/images/JRS035F.jpg
I am more than happy with these. The others are pics I nabbed from the
manufacturers website.
I picked you a nice pair, the lenses are in and they should go in the post
on Monday.

Many thanks,

Rick

Anyone?  I've had a look at the NUJ page, but it doesn't seem to cover this
specific type of transaction.  There are a number of my images Jason is
interested in using, several I'd be happy to let him have use of (either
exclusive or non exclusive) for a year (or some other defined period) for a
fixed upfront fee, and some I'd prefer a fee on a per-sale basis.  We could
both do with some guidance on fair rates so neither of us gets ripped off
(though I accept there will always be an element of risk in this type of
venture).

I've spoken with Jason about the costing and licensing issues involved with
this business and he now has to make some costing calculations before
finalising pricing policy. He really wants to ensure his dealings with tog's
are fully legal, fair and equitable. I'm sure he'll be in touch as soon as
this is done with an offer or two.
His Web programming talents are excellent BTW: The site looks great and is
very functional: Makes many of his online competitors look pretty lacklustre
in comparison
