My daughter dropped her brand new Canon A400 Powershot camera,
cracking the lcd display. I made the mistake of searching on the web
for Canon Digital Camera Repairs. Top of the list was Camera Clinic,
London. I chatted to them and was reassured that they knew what they
were talking about and was resigned to the fact that the repair would
cost about half the price of a new camera. Had to pay ?45 for a quote.
Quote came back at ?150, more than what the camera cost! Asked them
for the camera back, charged me another ?10 to post it back!

Looked at the camera myself, which is what I should have done in the
first place, and checked out the Canon website, something else I
should have done first. Got the name of an approved repairer,
Colchester Camera Repairs. They were willing to supply the lcd screen
as a spare part for ?20 all in. Camera Clinic said it needed a new
back light which it didn't. Also, Colchester Camera Repairs only
charge a few quid to look at a camera.

The part came in the post today, fitted it and all fine, all happy.

So I cannot recommend CameraClinic of 26 North End Crescent
London
W14 8TD

But can recommend Colchester Camera Repairs. 2 Barrack Street
Colchester Essex CO1 2LJ. Tel: 01206 790009 Fax: 01206 799067. Web:
www.camera-repair.co.uk.

Their Ron Williams was everso helpful.

I was quoted over the phone 90GBP (by Kodak) for a repair to a Kodak
CX6330 (sticking zoom mechanism) and you can get the equivalent model
(CX7330) for that amount. There's obviously no future in getting digital
cameras repaired.
Bought an upgrade model (CX7430) from Pixmania.

OTOH, they did repair my DC215 free of charge, and out-of-warranty when
the plastic battery compartment catch broke after falling off the sofa (in
a case). I only phoned up to see if I could buy the part as a spare and
they offered the repair.

But in general, your point holds. It's been this way with computer gear
for ages now.

Mike.

Best Regards,
Alex.
