Advice wanted on digital compacts

My ex-wife wants to get a digital compact camera for Christmas and is
thinking of paying about ?100.  She wants a simple camera that she can take
out when her SLR would be too big.  Lens quality and the ability to focus is
more important to her than features, software, or number of pixels.  I
haven't got the time to read all the reviews so any advice that allow a
choice between about 3 cameras which I could read about in more detail would
be very useful

TIA

You cannot hope to buy a decent digital camera for £100.  At £150 you
might have a chance, especially if you shop around.  At £200 you will
have a reasonably wide choice of decent cameras.

A glance at http://www.pricerunner.co.uk brings up a surprising range
for less than 100 pounds.

Two that look promising are:
Kodak EasyShare CX7300 3 mpx 60 quid no zoom.
Nikon CoolPix 2200 2.0 mpx 98 quid 3x zoom.
Both have their limitations, but as point & shoot cameras, it'd be hard
to go far wrong for that sort of money.

If you think those cameras are decent, I guess
we will just have to agree to differ.

It won't be the first time. However, in the context of cheap point and
shoot cameras, I'd be interested to hear why you consider these two less
than decent.
A colleague is very happy with his Easyshare 3700, which is a pretty
close relation to the 7300, though he payed a lot more than 60 quid for it.
I have a Nikon 4300 for student use and bought an 885 for another
colleague, both of which are related to the 2200 (same lens?). They're
not going to set the world on fire, but do everything we ask of them
with complete reliability (so far).

Thanks for the advice.

My back-up camera is an olympus c-750uz, in my opinion a hugely
underrated camera, I'm not sure of the current prices of them now or
their second-hand value.

Regards.

Do a search on www.equipmentexpress.co.uk for under 100GBP. Once you've
decided on the advertised features that you want you might have a (very)
short list to ask about.
