Model Release Forms at sprting events

Are they necessary ? I plan on photographing a world class waterskiing
event, and then sellin the images to magazines/newspapers/skiers
/fans/sponsors afterwards....

Do I need each skier to sign a form ? Do they need paying?

As I understand it (though I don't do that kind of work) release forms
are not required for such 'press' work.
