Any suggestions - I'll be allowed (by her indoors - yes I do Know who wears
the trousers - it's just she doesn't) to buy an iPod shortly - ostensibly
for music.  I'm about to fork out for a 300d - any suggestions as to how I
get CF'd images on to the iPod.
Yes, I know I could look at past google groups or the equivalent - if any -
but I haven't and I want up to date info.

Easy - Belkin make a card reader which just fits the iPod. It is fully
usable as a USB hard drive anyway, and the reader just enables transfer.
MacWarehouse stock it.

What's the best iPod price vs storage?

It used to be the 20Gb but I think the 40Gb may be competitive now. The
10Gb never was.

The iPod is a USB device not a USB host. The only way is via a PC with
USB device. "On location" this would be a laptop with a PCMCIA CF
converter and a USB or Firewire for output to iPOD.

As CF is just a mini hard drive. It would be clever of mac to put a CF
reader on the same channel as the hard drive in the iPOD. Then you would
be able to copy across. It would only require a case modification,
minimal hardware and some firmware revision. The iPOD mini uses a CF
type hard disk anyway.

I thought that but checked the Belkin site www.belkin.com and they have a
whole bunch of camera accessories to go with the iPod.

So what's the device for transferring CF to iPod? The Belkin Media
Reader does this from all formats and there is even a Belkin ipod Camera
which shoots files directly on to the iPod! The Media reader has 4
slots, reads six formats, and we have used it to transfer images which
the iPod saves as a 'roll' of film - you then plug the iPod into a Mac
and iPhoto finds the rolls automatically.

You can also record audio using an iPod mic system.

It is a perfectly functional field storage system.

Indeed it is and I do just that with my 20Gb iPod. I don't use iPhoto
though 'cos I don't like it but the use of the iPod is invaluable. I
have a 1Gb CF card in the camera and dump it off daily if I'm away from
home. Great stuff.

What's the transfer speed and battery life like?  I was thinking of
getting the belkin adapter for my 4G 40G iPod but all the comments I've
seen say it's very slow and severely strains the battery on the iPod.

Yes, it is quite slow, never noticed battery problems but then I usually
charge it up in the car each day.

Found the review of it which mentioned the problems:

The transfer rate is around 300 kbps.  Also here is a reply from Belkin
saying that it's designed for people with 1-3MB files and 128MB memory
cards:

Which, in effect, takes 300 words to say "tough luck". I certainly shan't
be bothering. Thanks for researching all that.

Does it have to be an iPod?  Have you looked at the Archos Gmini 220 or
Gmini 400?  I too have a 300D and am looking around for an 'out and
about' storage solution and have more or less settled on one of these..

You could look at www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-NPODG
their 20Gb player, plug in a card reader and store away.

Looks good - Only USB 1.1 though for storing pictures?  Is there a
manual available electronically to see how good the UI is for copying
files?

Thanks,

Yes: about 20-21Mb/min

There is no electronic manual available and the paper manual is not
the best (not bad but Chinese English at times). But downloading
pictures from a card reader is easy; the UI shows the directory
structure of the reader and the individual files; choose the directory
or a file and press copy.
