I have an Epson photo 870 printer (A4, 5 colour+blk). It can provide very
good results, but some of the nozzles block if I go for a spell without
using it, also and more annoyingly when I use the nozzle clean function a
number of times, black ink can flood the paper rollers leaving black smudges
over my nice print.
Thinking of upgrading to Epson 1290s or Canon i9100
Could anyone help with a few qustions?
1. Is there a simple way (kit) of cleaning black ink from the printer
rolloers on my 870?
2. Are the Epson 1290 or canon i9100 prone to nozzle blockage wiht
infrequent use? If so how do they compare?
3. apart from A3 and more dpi, is there a real world differenvce netween the
output quality of a correctly functioning Epson 870 and a 1290s
many thanks for your help

1. Dunno
2. Dunno about the 1290S - the 1290 certainly gets blocked.
3. Dunno, but the 1290 is good when it's working right.
Now one of my own - Anybody using the 1290 sucessfully with Kodak
Ultima Picture paper? Son-in-Law gave me some he bought cheap from
Jessops. It messes up at the end of each print and clogs the nozzles.

I use Kodak _Premium_ paper with a 1270. Most of the printer's settings
put too much ink down for the rather plasticky surface which could, I
suppose, lead to the effects you describe, though all I've noticed is a
tendancy to glob, creating a grainy looking image. This is avoided by
using a "glossy film" setting.

I've been using the Epson 1270 for the last few years and ink blockages have
been exceedingly rare, even though there can be periods of weeks when I don't
use the printer. (I turn mine off when not in use, and have never used other
than Epson ink.) Others on the dpreview forums have also reported very few
blockages on the 1270 as opposed to similar and later (Epson) printers. Might
be worth checking out so that you don't buy the wrong model!
