well Sam, it's a bone of contention but I would say those who have
tried SLR would say it is the right one to go for. of course there's a
wide range and loads of lenses and I'm hardly the man to advise. It
will probably start a minor war but I would post this question to

rec.photo.digital

and they'll explain the reasons why etc. BTW, if someone posts a huge
answer with like 25 reasons for buying a point and shoot ignore him.
It's not that his ideas are wrong but he's a troll and would rather
argue than talk, and then just by posting the same thing over and
over.

good luck.

What Paul said..

In summary and without going into ridiculous details:
- the sensor is *much* smaller, which results in high levels of noise
at high ISO settings/ in low-light, less *real* resolution per Mp, and
the inability to achieve shallow depth of field for portraiture, etc.
- you cannot change the lens. While the lens in the G9 is pretty good,
the range of choices for any dslr is much greater and there are much
better performing lenses available.
- the autofocus on a dslr is generally faster

Those are the biggies, there are more..  However, you should only
think about a dslr if the G9 is restricting you in some way, you know
that a dslr will help, and you can afford to go down this path.

Until then, stick with it and concentrate on the photgraphy without
getting too stressed about your equipment - the G9 is a pretty capable
camera.
