The hysteria reminds me of the tulip-bulb craze or the Salem witch
hunts.  Is there something about human beings that requires them to
behave in these extreme ways?

"Vast overreaction" seems to be an understatement.
More and more it seems that demonizing what is, in all likelyhood, an
innocent action is becoming a common reaction.
