Hi folks,

I wonder what the quality of this lens might be? At least compared on a
pricely basis, it's a wonder compared to the Nikon counterpart. Here in
Germany it's less than half the price of the Nikon lens.

But, what about its optical quality. One year ago I tested the mostly well
reviewed Tokina ATX Pro 28-70/2,6-2,8. Not bad, but compared to the Nikon
lens:

- unsharpness in the corners visible
- color fringing on light-dark boundaries
- a warmer tone on than my Nikon lenses (okay, could be changed in
Photoshop, but I don't like the workflow to become additionally complex)

So, I sold it after only 3 weeks being in my camera bag.

Anybody out there who has experience with this lens? Based on its price it
is a really bargain, but money isn't everything.

I checked out the Web for serious reviews, but I couldn't find any :-(

I guess You have read the tests on the net and found them inadequate, but
anyway:

http://www.photo.net/equipment/tokina/12-24-f4/

And I wont pretend I have som really quallified opinions on the lense, but I
have used it for a week or so and have been very satisfied.
I find the sharpness very good - also in the corners, almost no CA and
colours OK (but I don't mind colors so much thanks to RAW and
postprocessing)
There is some distortion - but I guess that will be a problem with all
ultrawides (zooms). I have a few ahots on the net, but its hard to evaluate
lenses on the background of a scaled down jpg. If You want, I could send you
a NEF picture (Nikon RAW format) by mail.

A few shots with Tokina 12-24. Click on the little camera icon under the
pics for exif.

They are just scaled and converted according to the camera settings - lots
of distorsion.
Hope You can use it.

regards and greetings from Denmark

Hi Jan,

after 6 days photo shooting in Tallinn Estonia some days ago and only 30mm
at the wide end (from my 20-35/2.8) I am glad to read your information.

Thanks for the good information and your kind NEF-offer. That would be a
good idea, and the best way at least to investigate the impact of the
existing color fringing, which is my greatest concern. I am only willing
to do as much digital processessing as necassary. Must be a "relict" from
my previous and still existing film photography, that for me the image
must be finished when the shot is done...but that's another story.

So, I would very much appreciate your NEF's. Please send them to
ebay_at_hintze-online.com (replace the "_at_" by "@" naturally).

Thanks a lot in advance
