how would you connect my Speedotron Brownline D-402 studio flash system with
my new Canon EOS Rebel XT?

If there's no PC socket perhaps you can use the on-camera flash to
trigger the studio flash remotely?  If you can't adjust the power of
the on-camera flash (I don't think the Rebel has flash compensation)
and worry about the light spillover affecting the lighting you can buy
a cheap flash for the hot shoe and turn it way down and use as a
trigger.
