How difficult is it to get a hotel room in VT and NH during the leaf
peeper season?  I've heard three things ... 1) everything will be
booked solid by end of summer or 2) you can find a room if you book by
noon that day or 3) you can find a room by noon *except* on the
weekends, when you need reservations.

Anyone who has shot up there care to offer advice?  I'm looking at the
first two weeks in Oct, probably 2-3 days in or near Gorham and North
Conway (New Hampshire) and Woodstock, Stowe and Lyndonville in Vermont,
then on to the Maine coast near Bar Harbor.

I'd like to wait on booking a room if possible to try to keep up with
the best color, but also don't look forward to sleeping in the rental
car and listening to my wife say "I TOLD you to get a room before we
came up here!"

We camp when we go up there. The Vermont state parks are very nice and
provide extra opportunities for photography. They might also provide
extra opportunities for your wife to bust your chops <G>.

I had no problem when I went in 2001 and 2002 1 week in advance.  I mostly
just stayed in Super 8 motels though, but they were pretty nice.  I found it
easy to make new reservations and cancel other ones with Super 8 when I
changed my schedule due to bad weather.  Good Luck.
