What is the best season for photography in places like Zion, Bryce,
Canyonlands, etc.?

Spring (April to mid-May especially) can be great, especially in Canyonlands
and Arches when the cactus and Indian Paintbrush are blooming.  Usually good
weather, not quite as many people unless you time it to hit the $%&# Jeep
Jamboree in Moab.

Fall can be great for good weather and the colors are usually excellent in Zion
around Nov 1 plus/minus 2 weeks or so.

Winter can be great IF you get a nice snowstorm followed by clearing skies,
especially at Bryce and Canyonlands.  Doesn't happen often but when it does
it's often spectacular.  For much of the rest of the time I don't like the
winter light though, too hazy and dull.

Late summer (say mid-July thru September) can be great IF you get a series of
afternoon monsoon thunderstorms with dark skies followed by clearing skies ...
if you're lucky you'll get a spectacular rainbow.

For my travel dollars the worst time is say mid-May thru the end of June since
it's often hot and crowded and there are rarely any stormy weather days, just
deadly clear skies, as a general rule.  I also avoid winter except when there's
a storm coming ... try to get there a day ahead of it to avoid driving in snow
and ice and then hunker down and hope for clear skies since the storms
typically blow thru quickly.  For some reason the snow storms are hard to
predict in this area -- I've often driven to the Grand Canyon for a big
snowstorm only to end up with drab rain and fog, and I got married on the south
rim on a day with a forecast of 'partly cloudy skies' that turned into 14" of
fresh powder.  You never know ...

Thanks. I detected a fair amount of first-hand experience there.

I was going to say anytime you can get there!

But do avoid the canyonlands area in June +/- a little:
biting gnats come out and nothing stops them.
The rest of the year is pretty bug-free.

It is generally hazy when the wind direction is from the southwest,
as smog from the LA basin moves in.  It is generally clear with 100+
mile visibility when the prevailing wind is from the west or
northwest.  Amazing that the smog reaches that far!  You can even
see it moving in.  Seems like it's happening more and more
often these days compared to 15 years ago.

It's a matter of opinion, but I like fall - September, or October before it
gets too cold.  Fall color in Zion is great.

Do the shuttle buses in the Bryce/Zion still run in mid-late October?
I'd love to go back then (I've been in July), but wouldn't drive.
(stuck to school holidays)

I think in Zion you HAVE to take the valley shuttle bus until Nov 1 (unless
this has recently changed).  After Nov 1 you can drive your own vehicle.

Didn't know they had a shuttle bus system at Bryce.

NOT mandatory like Zion, not particularly useful for photographers since it
doesn't start until 8am.

I did chivvy them (by email) about the late start of their busses before my
last trip, but didn't get any reply.

Maybe 8 a.m. isn't too bad mid-late October?
Until the clocks changed here last w/e, it was pretty dark at 8a.m. and I'm
sure Zion/Bryce are further south. (Mind you, we went out at 5.30 when I got
frozen half to death photographing dawn at the Grand Canyon. We definitely
went out too early because I wasn't sure how long it would take us to get to
where I wanted to go, but I can't remember by how much)

Dawn (as opposed to sunrise) was 6:30am in late November. You want to be
there for dawn (20-30 minutes before sunrise). But since the shuttles stop
Sep 30, it doesn't matter much.

The main use of the shuttle is that you can drive your car to a point, hike
the rim to another point and then take the shuttle back to your car.
