I'd spend at least 3 days in the Santa Fe area myself, for the fine food,
scenic surrounds and arty stuff. It's one of our favorite cities. There are a
couple of excellent photo galleries in Santa Fe, especially the Andrew Smith
Gallery, which often has several original prints from photogs like Ansel Adams,
Edward Weston, Alfred Stieglitz, Eugene Smith, Karsh, Steve McCurry,
Christopher Burkett, Henri Cartier-Bresson and dozens of others. The Burkett
Ilfochromes are probably the finest color prints I've ever seen ... bring
money, lots of money if you plan on buying something from one of the greats but
even if you don't buy it's worthwhile spending several hours drooling over the
great prints. There's also usually a good exhibit, from the web site I see
it's Annie Leibowitz starting Oct 22 ...

I'd advise a visit to the Georgia O'Keefe Museum in Santa Fe too, and maybe a
day trip out to her old Ghost Ranch NW of town.
I'd pass on Carlsbad since it's well to the south and will likely eat up two
days of driving back and forth, but if you do go there I'd also try to stop by
White Sands NM. You might like Taos, you might not ... it comes alive in ski
season but is pretty quiet this time of year.

Albuquerque is jammed during the International Balloon Festival, which I think
is the first couple of weeks in October (should be easy to get the exact dates
off the 'net). My wife is stopping up there during the festival and can't find
an open hotel room, for example, so check that carefully. You might also have
trouble finding an SUV to rent if that's when you were coming and you're flying
into Albuquerque. The rest of the state should be OK that time of year.
Have a good trip.

If you like birds then you might stop by Bosque del Apache NWR, which is about
90 miles south of Albuquerque just off the Interstate. It's about a month
before the peak migration but by early Nov you should see many thousands of
snow geese and sandhill cranes, plus many other species.

I'll second that. Best times are the hour or so before sunset and the
period around sunrise (bundle up for the latter). The snow geese will have
a surprise for you at sunrise. You can stay the night in Socorro, a few
miles N of Bosque.
If you drive from Santa Fe to Taos, I'd recommend the old high road.

Why? What's the name of the road?
Thanks again,

This route takes you through small communities with famous churches and
other photo ops, such as Chimayo, Truchas, Las Trampas. It also takes you
higher into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The route numbers are 503, 76,
518...

Jo a friend directed me to your question about late Oct or Nov for a
trip to N.M.
I would defiantly suggest after the fiesta is over (Balloon one) as the
city and surrounding areas are filled.
If you come in Nov you might like the Bosque del Apache as mentioned and
you can drive through it....here is a site.

Also if you have not been to Acoma it is a Native American Pueblo and is
called Sky City. As far a a cheaper place to stay you might try some of
the places in Rio Rancho about 1 hr from Santa Fe....Hope this helps
you.

In case you are wondering about Bosque here are a few shots my wife and I took
while visiting ... just click a thumbnail to see a larger image ... great place
for a photographer, several of these images have been printed in major
magazines ... http://members.aol.com/hiltonfotography/bosque/index.htm
Roger C has quite a few (mostly) sandhill crane shots up on his site also ...

There aren't as many birds there in October but it's rocking in November ...
