New England fall color in late September

I have a business meeting in the Berkshires the 3rd week of September.
I've yet to make my air reservations; I'm undecided how much (if any)
personal time to spend in New England afterwards.  I realize that
September is early for fall color, but what if I were to travel north
and/or to higher elevations?  Any comments/suggestions would be
appreciated.

You will find some fall colors in the Berkshires that time of year,
especially near water, (streams, swamps, lakes).

I always like to take photo's when the leaves are midway through the
change, I think the bright colors are better with a little green in them
still.

You should get a good assortment of responses to this query.  I grew up in
Manchester, (southern) Vermont (haven't been there in nevermind how many
years), and the rule-of-thumb target for prime foliage was Columbus Day.
Certainly the 3rd week of Sep is too early for the Berkshires and even
southern VT, but northern VT should have something to offer.  And it's not
all that far - the whole state is only a couple of hours drive end-to-end.
And frankly, my completely biased opinion is that Vermont is worth
photographing any time of year.

You might want to consider Mount Washington in New Hampshire.  The road
to the summit will still be open in September.  This is the world's
windiest location.  The web page for the Observatory will give you a
preview.

Maybe. Last year, colors were late, and didn't peak until mid-October. It
varies a little every year, so bring the camera and film, and if it looks
good, hit the Mohawk Trail for some decent scenics.
