A couples of meters. And I have used a little flash - iirc 1/4th af full
power from a Nikon SB-800 flash.
The two first is as I intended, when it comes to exposure - I wanted to pass
on the feeling of a dark forrest flor to the spectator. I think You can see
the use of flash on the second (the anemone) - the almost absolutely lack of
shadow from the stamens.
My reason for posting was I found it a little curious to use a 300 mm for
closeups. Usually I would have used my 100 mm Macro instead.

A real wild roe deer. I used between 1 and 2 hours to get reasonable near
the creature. Next time in a zoo :-)

Well, I've read and agree is that the best use of flash is when you
can;t tell that a flash was used.
The 300 mm gave you the nice shallow dof which is nice.
