Vivitar quality and support

Is anyone else experiencing VERY poor (non-existent) support and low quality
from Vivitar?  I've been trying to even get in contact with their support
line in Southern California...I've left a couple of messages and my call
hasn't even been returned.  I bought one of my daughters a Vivitar DigiCam
and just need to get a replacement cable to download pictures (non-removable
memory so it is useless without the cable).  I also bought my other daughter
a Vivitar PZ7000 (P/S camera) that is dead, dead, dead after its very first
day of use.  (Yes, the battery is fine and I even bought another to try just
in case.)

Is there some number to call where they actually DO answer with a human
being?

I know Vivitar used to sell very good stuff (my 30 year old 283 flash is
still going strong), but after these two experiences they are on my "never
buy" list from now on.

I had e-mailed the place suggested on their web site about 1 month ago
for some information on a dedicated (Pentax) flash that I had bought
via B&H. NO answer. The manual was less than clear on a number of
items. The flashgun workmanship seems fine. I've had a number of
Vivitar flashes over the years with no problems whatsoever.

I also have a 2x teleconverter (B&H also) that I got that works just
fine.

Go figure??

This sort of thing strikes me as so strange that a company that took the
time and effort to build up a good reputation over 30 years would just throw
it away by shipping low quality merchandise and being totally unresponsive.
What really irks me is that I have problems with two products that I bought
rather close together based upon personal good experience with the brand
some years back.  Probably the company was sold to some holding company that
merely markets stuff made in China at the lowest possible price (to them)
and quality.
