Porter's

I just received the latest edition of Porter's catalog, and I'm puzzled
about something.

Whenever I've ordered ANYTHING via mail order, I've NEVER had to calculate
the shipping weight to determine the shipping cost. IMO, it's NOT my
responsibility to figure this out; in most cases, I've usually encountered
charts that say something like, "If your subtotal is between A and B
dollars, your shipping charge is X." I object very much to this; Porter's is
the first company I've EVER encountered that requires its _customers_ to
tally the shipping weight; in those other cases, it's transparent to me, the
buyer, as it should be.

This idiosyncracy aside, however, has anyone ordered from them, and if so,
how was your experience? I'm asking because they carry some things that I
could use, albeit at prices usually higher than elsewhere.

Fast and correct service and I have ordered from them many time and I
don't recall every having to figure out shipping costs, other than to
note whether you want normal UPS service or one-day service etc.

Dick,

Okay, then...why do they make the customer jump through those hoops when you
look at their printed catalog? All you have to do is look at the order form
to see what I mean.

Disclaimer--> I do not have any association with Porters Camera Store except
as a customer

I have bought from Porter's frequently. I can't recall ever having a
backorder. On one order, they didn't include an item that was checked off on
the packing list. I called, told them, they shipped the missing item.

As for your comments on the shipping charges: Packages shippers such as UPS,
Fedex, et al, charge based on weight and distance, not the price of the
merchandise in the box.. (You also have to look up your zip code and
determine your shipping zone to get the shipping charge.) If you order $200
dollars worth of film (light weight), and I order a $200 enlarger (heavy
weight), under the "subtotal between A and B..shipping charge is..." plan,
you get screwed on shipping and I get a bargain. The way Porters does it,
every customer pays the shipping charge that he actually incurs. Actually,
in the days of the Sears catolog, where you filled out an order form,
enclosed a check, and sent your order in; figuring shipping weight was a
part of the procedure. (Insert rant here about how the Internet has "dumbed
down" Americans! BTW, there are 16 ounces to a pound!)

That being said, Porters is good, fast, has everything imagineable in stock,
and their catolog is very detailed, but they aren't the cheapest place
around.

For a counterpopint on Porter's, try this on:

Many years ago (the last time I ordered anything from Porter's), I sent them
an order a  half dozen items.  A fixed shipping was charged under their
system.  Some days later, I received a shipping box big enough to hold 4 or
5 footballs.  In it was:

An invoice which announced the discontinuance or indefinite back order of
all items but one: a fifty cent PC terminal cap in an envelope, a charge
receipt  for the fifty cent purchase price plus $8.50 in shipping, and a
whole lot of packing stuffer.  Mind you, this order was from a "current"
catalogue I had just received from Porter's. Of course, the terminal cap
could have been sent in the envelope for the price of a first class stamp
and would have arrived twice as fast.

I can well see why Porter's flat rates their shipping, handling and packing
charges - it's were they make most of their money.

It still took me another two years before they gave up and stopped sending
me their catalogues, which were mostly full of junk anyway.
