Seeking recommendation for used SLR gears

Hello gurus/listers/grouplings,

I need your advice on buying used SLR gears. I started the hobby of
photographing a year ago when I bought a Canon G3 digital camera. Now
I decide to buy a used SLR. More specifically,

(1). I am looking for a SLR body plus a 50mm prime lens and flash as
start-up. Will add wide-angle and telephoto prime lenses later.

(2). I need to use it as a good tool to learn such techniques as depth
of field. So please take this into consideration when you make
recommendations.

(3). I am open to either manual focus or auto focus, but one thing
that is very important to me is the lens mount compatibility. I do not
want it to be a painful process to choose lenses because of the
limitation of lens mount compatibility.

(4). My main interests are outdoor and landscape.

I am looking forward to your valuable suggestions. Since I am living
in an area with extensive exposure to used SLR gears (through
classified ads or dealers), I appreciate if you can make your
recommendation as specific as possible. Thank you in advance!

I suggest a visit to a full service local camera store. The salesman
can show you a large variety of used and new cameras and you can see
how they feel and handle.
There are so many cheap new 35mm SLRs these days you probably won't
save much buying used.

Well... Wal-Mart has the Canon Rebel Ti for $270 which is a great camera
with depth of field preview... or save $50 more by buying it online from
various retailers.

70s and 80s era SLRs are going cheap at flea markets and swap meets. Have
seen Canon AE-1P's with accessories sell in the $30 range. I just bought a
nice Minolta XG-1 in the box for $20. With flea market cameras, you got to
know what you're looking at well since a camera that looks like new can have
a million small problems, but you save a fortune over Ebay and local camera
shops.

The OP is clearly a novice at this--and I think he might not be able to
properly assess a flea market camera.  All the ones I have seen are junk.
And the sellers typically cart them from place to place, in the rain, in the
sun, etc.

It's fine to risk a few dollars on a camera of unknown provenance, but he
might do better to pay more for less risk.  KEH comes to mind, although
their gear is a bit pricey.

Years after I sold my old Nikon FTN system to get into medium format, I
wanted to get back into 35mm somewhat and put together a very good used
system based on the Olympus OM-2. You can get Olympus OM-2 bodies with
the motor drive at reasonable prices on eBay (I got mine at a local
auction) and add all the lenses you want. Very reasonable, very good.
Full manual operation or semiautomatic or full automatic with automatic
flash using their dedicated flashes (also available on eBay). Focus is
manual. A truly fine 35mm SLR that you can get at bargain prices these
days.
