Hi,

I have a Sunpak 383 shoe mount and a 24 in. silver umbrella.  I have a flash
holder for this combo which attaches to the light stand, but the output of
the flash is directed 1/2 to 2/3 the way away from the center of the
umbrella because the flash is held on vertically.  Is there a holder sold
which could hold the shoe mount flash so the light is directed to the middle
of the umbrella?

Thanks,

Rick W.

Larson enterprises used to make an umbrella that mounted on the short end of
a j-shaped bracket.  The flash would mount to the other end of the bracket
on a 3/8" rod (different mounts available for different types of flashes),
the rod was mounted on the end of the bracket with a set screw and could be
adjusted up and down to center the light output of the flash.  The whole
thing then mounted to the light stand with another fancy swivel bracket
designed so that the rig could be attached to the stand at it's center of
gravity.

Do a Google search, check eBay, they turn up from time to time.  I could
probably assemble one and shoot a low res pic if you are interested.  (No I
don't have any to spare--sorry!)

duct tape the flash to the shaft,

does your flash swivel all the way around so the sensor points towards teh
subject?
if not you will have to use only manual power, no auto exposure unless you
can ttl through your camera system.

see if you can just bend the umbrella shaft so its more in the center.  or
bend the piece where the mount fits.  I did that to a mount that had a
quarter 20 screw mount (that's the tripod screw thread) that was long
enough, just whacked it and it bent enough to allow the flash to aim more
towards the center without smashing the threads.

I'd just buy a bigger brollie

Larson, the Reflectasol Umbrella people, used to make a J-shaped flash
holder with a umbrella/stand  mount.
