Lens hood for Bronica PS50/3.5?

Hello folks,

I am trying to find an inexpensive lens hodd for the lens in the
subject line. I have looked at the Bronica hood, and $100 seems a bit
spendy for a lens hood.

I have also looked at the Lee WA hood, but that item is even more
spendy at $150 to $300 depending on the version bought.

Other than shading the lens with my hand or with a hat, do any of the
square filter systems make a shade which does not vignette the 50mm
Bronica? The shade I would like to get would be usable with at least
one filter, and if it does cost $100, would at least be usable on more
than one lens.

I do have some of the Cokin P Series stuff, and those hoods are cheap,
but it looks deep enough to vignette.

Thanks,

Mike

see http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/flare.html (and mf/beat.html on even more
ridiculous prices for lens hoods etc Beat This! Ridiculous Photogear
Prices on high lens shade prices ;-)...

it is pretty easy to make or modify a custom lens hood; you can also get
some lower cost bellows (ambico+ is one version often very cheap) shades.
the older kodak shades are also very good, esp. if you use gel filters

See mf/black.html on flat black paints; krylon flat black is what I use

there is also a section on homebrew filters such as polarizers and star
burst and diffraction gratings in larger sizes, see
http://medfmt.8k.com/bronfilters.html#homebrew

most of the commercial filters are curiously oversized; the 28mm filters
on my nikon 35mm fits the 24mm and so on. They are also often short, esp.
in the telephoto range.

my favorite lens hood is the $300 US$ plastic lens hood for the rollei
40mm f/3.5 SA (see http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/beat.html) - the black plastic
is shiny and reflects glare into the lens, so you have to fix this $300
commercial custom lens shade with black felt to cut flare from it ;-) see
post near top of http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/beat.html for grins ;-)

my point is that spending big $$ on lens hoods still results in often sub
optimal performance, while building one yourself using the vignetting test
tips on the mf/flare.html pages ensures a custom design for a few $$ ;-)

I found a used hood at Adorama for $30. It was in excellent shape and has
worked fine. Check out the Used sections for some of the more predominant
dealers.

Jack
