Ah. Well, maybe better to back up to the latest and
greatest Epson flatbed photo scanner that Ed *does*
support, or for which there are reliable and positive
reviews.. I'm way out of touch with all the new models
since the 1640SU came out. What's special about the
3170, anyway?
Or maybe see if you can get a few moments time on
one of these, machines and figure out for yourself whether
the scanner & driver meet your basic needs.

It has the same specifications as the 3200 (minus the firewire interface);
it's supposed to be a little faster, and it's $200 cheaper -- roughly half
the price.

It will take me a *lot* longer than a few moments to check it out because
I've never done any digital image processing before, so I don't know what
my basic needs are yet. So I'm looking for a meaningful review or
testimonial. Best Buy sells the 3170, if I want a 3200 I have to order one
from Amazon.
