Does anyone have an Epson Perfection 3170 scanner yet?

There are still no online reviews anywhere that I can find.  Viewscan
doesn't work with it, and I dunno if Ed will get it working (is this a big
deal?)  Has anyone here used a 3170 to scan 645 or 6x6 negatives?  How well
does it work?  Does it render colors accurately from a color negative?

Thanks, regards,
Bob

Speaking from experience with an older Epson photo
scanner (1640SU)...

The Epson scanner driver is rather wimpy when it comes
to scanning transparencies (eiher negative or positive.)
You can get the job done, for sure, but it's just a pain in
the butt.  Part of the problem is that there's no way to read
the RGB values from the preview.

I suspect Ed will write a driver for it as soon as he can
get his hands on one.  Ed's amazingly quick at porting
VueScan to new scanners.

He's had one for a week or two, and says its command set is nonstandard. I
dunno if he's given up or not.

Ah.  Well, maybe better to back up to the latest and
greatest Epson flatbed photo scanner that Ed *does*
support, or for which there are reliable and positive
reviews..  I'm way out of touch with all the new models
since the 1640SU came out.  What's special about the
3170, anyway?

Or maybe see if you can get a few moments time on
one of these, machines and figure out for yourself whether
the scanner & driver meet your basic needs.

The "Perfection 3200"

It has the same specifications as the 3200 (minus the firewire interface);
it's supposed to be a little faster, and it's $200 cheaper -- roughly half
the price.

It will take me a *lot* longer than a few moments to check it out because
I've never done any digital image processing before, so I don't know what
my basic needs are yet.  So I'm looking for a meaningful review or
testimonial.  Best Buy sells the 3170, if I want a 3200 I have to order one
from Amazon.

Best regards,
Bob

I've had mine for a couple weeks now.  I'm pretty darn happy with it.  I
don't like the way my 35mm slides have scanned (that may be my exposure) but
as far as negetive film, 35mm and 6x6 the results have been great.
