I am looking at getting some gear from KEH, but was wondering about their
rating systems. Has anyone gotten stuff rated as "bargain" before? If so,
what could I expect? I am thinking of lenses, so I am a little leary.

thanks

I have been buying from KEH since 1976. Their cosmetic grades are just
that -- cosmetic. All glass they sell is 100% perfect. No cleaning
marks, no fungus, no separation, or your money cheerfully refunded. They
also grade very conservatively, and have a generous return policy.

Unless there is a specific note on their listing -- like "UG few clng
mrks f.e." i.e. Ugly (scratches, flaked paint) metal, a few cleaning
marks on the front element -- the glass is always perfect.

IMHO KEH sets the bar and very few others come close.

Disclaimers: I am not affiliated with KEH in any way except that they
have extracted a whole lot of money from me. I have never even been to
Atlanta. In 31 years I have never had to send anything back.

Thanks! I've got the catalog in front of me and was wondering about the
bargain rating.

Bear in mind that they do sell items with defects from the web site.
The defects are clearly spelled out and if you don't care about something,
then it's a wonderful way to get a real bargain.

Everything they sell, even the items with defects comes with a
two week return privledge (you pay postage both ways) and a 90
day warranty.

Everyone has a different opionion of a the need for a warranty and
its value. YMMV.

I've bought Bargain and EX items from them before. Their ratings are
applied VERY conservatively, i.e. they give a description of what it
means for something to be "bargain", and when the item arrived, it
appeared to me to be in good enough shape I would have rated it EX by
their criteria; the EX items should have been rated EX+ ...

YMMV, but that's been my experience dealing with them.

I've just looked back over my history with them:

2 LF lenses, 2 Hass lenses and a Hass back. Of the two LF lenses, one
was EX+, one BG. They both look equally good to me.

Of the two Hass lenses, one was a 150CF that they rated EX but I thought
was more like BG - a fair bit of the lettering was scraped off. One was
a 250C that they rated BG and I thought was better than the 150! Both
were in perfect optical and mechanical condition anyway.

The A24 back I bought recently was EX+ but I thought they could have
said it was like new. And the price was less then they generally go for
on eBay.

The only thing I wish is that they would put serial numbers in the
descriptions so you could work out the year of manufacture.

I bought a bargain grade RB67 220 back that went belly up within two months.
They only guarantee for 14 days, as I recall.
As with anything heavily used, it's hard to predict longevity, but it's a
safe bet that whatever it is will need overhauled within a year or two (or
less).

They are EXCELLENT to work with.....I bought a RZ67 Pro II from them
that was in GD condition with a wrinkle in the bellows...it was VERY
inexpensive....I realized there was a problem as you could fire the
shutter with the dark slide in...they didnt have one in GD condition, so
they shipped me another one in EX condition, which looked like it was
BRAND NEW...They then said ship them my old one in the box the new one
came in, so I was not without a camera....I got an AMAZINg camera at a
bargain price in EXCELLENT condition.....KEH is a GREAT place to deal
with.

Their gear is great, as others have attested to.  I once purchased the
much sought after Pentax 85/1.4 A* lens from them in UG condition, but
the glass was amazing (although the body was beat to hell).  The
mechanics still worked fine.  I've also purchased several other lenses
from them, never a problem with the equipment.

My only issue has been with SHIPPING.  They lost one order (Scanner)
and it ended up on the other side of the country (I'm in Canada, and
they somehow mangled my shipping address.  The CSR "merged" my account
with another KEH customer, and they had that customers province and
postal (zip) code, and my street address. The address they shipped it
to didn't even exist!).  They also refuse to use anything except UPS
which is a real PITA.  When they lost my scanner it took them a week
to find it, and another week to sort everything out, but it got here
eventually.  When lenses do arrive they arrive in solid packaging
though, so they know what they are doing in terms of packing.
