Maybe so but not having a protective filter or lens cap is a bad
idea......and on can always take off the filter. Personally I don't use
UV filters....except the digital camera.

Notice that the first thing I said was "use lens caps".

I'm not buying these as lens protectors. My latest slides from bright
sunny days seem to be somewhat hazy, so I really want a UV filter, for
high UV situations.
That said, does anyone have experience cleaning the B+W MRC filters?

You should think about some polarizing filters.

I already have a couple of polarizing filters. I think UV is more
appropriate for my needs. I considered a skylight filter, but have
more control in Photoshop to make color corrections just in the
shadows. The effects of UV are much more difficult to remove.

Cleaning is not any different from how I treat other coatings, on the
rare occasion they need it. When I use a filter (MRC) I generally use
a brush to remove any loose stuff, and then I use an optical grade
microfiber cloth to remove smears. If persistent, I breath on the
filter and wipe with the microfiber cloth. On occasions I have used a
lens pen, it also works fine.
