Well, having brought a few frames for scanning on a Frontier, here are a
couple results (cropped down).

The sunrise shot seems okay, but in the full scan it is blocked up a
little here and there.

The red leaf shot has lost a lot of detail in the leaves v. the slide.

Make sure you view at 100%

Velvia 100F, 500CM + 80mm f/2.8

Kodak E100VS, 500CM + 150mm f/4.

(The scan service wiped out the detail in the reds, unfortunately).

Comments?

Cheers,
Alan

So scanning services can suck.
Why am I not surprised.

If you want to control the process
carefully, get an LS-9000 or a used
LS-8000, and do it yourself.

I've noticed some digital capture devices seem to have problems with
saturated reds, turns into a solid mass of color. My nikon P&S digital does
this and have had some scans look like that as well. Not sure what causes
this?

I tried some fuji scans hopeing for an easy workflow, I wasn't impressed but
was shooting print film. Real weird color casts in the scans.

I have had the same problem with both slide and print film in this area. I
don't think they spend the time to " tweak" the Frontier since they don't do
many of the film scans anymore. It would be interesting to know if a "pro"
lab has the same problems as I used to do mine at Costco.

Mine was a "pro" lab. While the scans looked bad, he prints looked OK
although I never cared for that consumer fuji crystal archive though, WAY
too contrasty.

I went to one that served pros and was highly regarded.  The guys at the counter
didn't know diddly, but the guy at the machine was knowledgeable.  When they
finally let me speak to him, he didn't have too many kind words to say about the
Frontier machine.  I've not gotten any really good results from any Frontier
lab.  I've gotten better results overall by doing my own scanning and printing.

Showcase in Atlanta. I used to use them for all my printing until they went
with the frontier machine, like I said that "consumer" fuji crystal archive
paper is awful..

I agree and even printing digital files they are bad. I compared them (and 3
other fuji machines) to another lab using an AGFA machine, no contest the
AGFA prints were MUCH sharper and looked like I expected them to look.
