Is there any way of identifying a Hasselblad PME from a PME3? The London
branch of my shop has a lot of PME3s listed on stock but the one they sent
up to us doesn't specify which model it is externally. Given the state of
the crap London usually send us, it wouldn't surprise me if they'd sent me a
PME.

Yes. It should say PME3 on it, above the eyepiece.
Suppose it doesn't, have a look at the serial number, or rather the two
letters preceding the number. It is found underneath.
And remember the Hasselblad coding system, mapping "VHPICTURES" on to
"1234567890".
PME3 finders started selling in 1989, which is coded as "RE".
So any code indicating a date of manufacture before, say, one year earlier
(= RR) at least will indicate it is not a PME3, but a VFC-6, later called
PME.
And there's the exposure test. The PME3 should give correct exposure when
used with Acute Matte or Acute Matte-D screens in the camera.
The earlier VFC-6/PME doesn't, since it is calibrated to be used with the
approx. one stop dimmer old type screen. It will indicate an EV that is one
stop too high when used with Acute Matte screens..
