One of the ways to begin getting your work out there is to go to one of the
portfolio review programs that are available around the country. I am talking
about Photo Americas in Portland, Fotofest in Houston, the portfolio reviews in
Santa Fe every year, etc. The reviewers are generally magazine
editors/publishers, curators, gallery owners/managers, etc.

View Camera and CameraArts find 10 or so bodies of work every year by attending
these review programs. We first met Robert Smith in Portland in April at the
Photo Americas festival.

Other ways to get your work seen are to arrange exhibits in libraries,
restaurants, book stores etc. You can also submit work to magazines (be sure to
follow there submission guidelines), galleries, etc.

We publicized the Photo Arts Santa Fe extensively in CameraArts. We did the
same with Photo Americas in Portland.

www.photoamericas.com
www.photoartssantafe.com

neither of these will happen till 2005. Foto Fest in Houston is happening in
Feb of 2004

Foto Fest is a great way, but it is expensive and probably filled out
already. The "meeting place" as they call it, usually fills out within
weeks after they announce it. If you plan to send an app for the 2004
event now, you are probably too late. Their web site is
www.fotofest.org

If anybody has a web site for the Portland shindig I would appreciate
it if you post it, as I never have heard of it.

yes fotofest is filled already and has a waiting list 100 deep already.
However, now I know the consider this event in June next year and to be
ready for their "opening" day.

Review Santa Fe
http://www.photoprojects.org/about/programs/sympos/sympos_top.html appears
to have an event happening in July 2004.  Steve, do you have any comments on
this event?

http://www.stephencohengallery.com/ lists two events Photo L.A. and Photo
San Francisco.  Though there seems to be considerable marketing muscle here,
the site doesn't mention how to be considered.  Perhaps if one has to ask to
be considered, one won't be considered!

Photo LA and Photo San Francisco do not have portfolio review sessions.

The reviews in Santa Fe are very worthwhile. You have to go through a jury
process to be selected for the reviews. You can call 505-983-1400 to get more
info.

The View Camera conference next April 23-25 will also have portfolio reviews.
