Hello,
I want to get a Polaroid back for my 4x5 cameras. I was told to get
either the 545 or 545i back.
What is the difference between the two and is one preferable to the
other? I want a workhorse and not a collector's piece.
Thanks for any information.
Regards,
Bogdan

Last I heard the difference is metal (545) vs. plastic.

545 - Metal, therefore _may_ be stronger, but is certainly heavier.
Older. A bit cheaper used.
545i - Plastic, therefore _may_ not be as strong. Certainly lighter.
Newer. A bit more expensive used, or very expensive new.
I haven't heard of people breaking the 545i, so I think the concerns that
people experessed about it being plastic when it first came out may have
been overstated. Both seem to work equally well, but the i version is quite
a lot lighter.
I have an old 545, and it works perfectly. If it ever breaks I might
replace it with an i, but to be honest, I don't think it's ever very likely
to break, and I'm not bothered enough by the weight to change it for that
reason alone - maybe if I back-packed a lot it would matter to me much more.

the release mechanism was improved in the newer model so that it
is easier to remove the film with out processing.

I also understand that the "i" version works better with Quickloads
than does the original. That's the rumor, anyway.
