Recently bought a 4 x 5 w/ Schneider G-Claron 9/210 lens & Copal No. 1
shutter. Local camera shop says shutter accurate only to 1/25, anything
above is not. The camera is a Busch Pressman D, made in the late
1940's. The lens & shutter probably replaced the originals, but I don't
know when. Obviously, the shutter got used a lot, since it's now
inaccurate.
Question: Is this a repairable problem, or will it be so expensive I
ought to replace the shutter? I plan to use the camera for landscape &
other outdoor work, such as architectural.

A- Copal 1 shutters don't have a "1/25" setting, rather a "1/30"
setting, unless you have a very unusual one. Are you sure it's a Copal
shutter?
B- When you say "anything above 1/25" do you mean the lower or higher
speeds?
C- How inaccurate are the speeds? ANSI standards allow +/- deviations
of 30%.
D- How reliable is your local shop's shutter tester?
E- If you know the actual speeds at each setting you can continue to
use the shutter and adjust your exposures accordingly.
F- Generally, all your shutter will need is a good cleaning. That's a
simple procedure and should run you about $50. Check the links other
responders have already offered.
Good luck!

Yes, it is a Copal & you're right, it has a 1/30 setting. The store
clerk told me over the phone when telling me my camera was ready for
pick-up, & I didn't check before posting.

The faster speeds.

I don't know the answers to the above & I'll check back with the
technician instead of dealing with the store clerk.

This is good to know. I have checked the links & appreciate the info.
Thanks.
