Hi, I'm in Australia and have noticed that I can no longer find
kodachrome. I have some rolls left (35mm) and I was wondering if
anyone knows if this stuff is still being processed by kodak and how
long for?

Thanks

Kodak is still selling Kodachrome film around the world, though not
actively marketing it. You might have to look in specialty camera stores
to find it, or purchase by mail order.

If Kodak chooses to discontinue it, which they have not said they are
intending to do, so this is only hypothetical, they typically support
processing until the expiry date of any film they sell.  They did this,
as an example, when they discontinued the larger format version of
Kodachrome.  Therefore, even if they discontinued the film tomorrow,
processing would be available for several years.

Right now, there are three labs around the world that still process
Kodachrome: In Japan, Switzerland, and the USA.  I believe any film from
Australia is shipped to Japan for processing.  You should contact the
in-country Kodak office to find out where you can take or send the film
to get it processed.

The K-14 labs are down to two now.  Dwane's in the US, and Kodak's Swiss
lab.  The Japanese lab closed in June 2004.

There were two labs in Japan, and only one shut down in June.

I believe the Horiuchi lab in Tokyo is still processing Kodachrome.

You're right, I stand corrected!  It was KJ Imaging that shut down in June.

Nope, shut down the K-14 processor March 1, 2004.

These are the last three K-14 processors running.

I take it I can no longer simply send the film to Kodak through the local
grocery store, if it's Kodachrome?

I thought Qualex was going to forward it to the processor and
Dwayne's was going to operate as an OEM for them.

Can anyone confirm this?  It would be reasonable, because it would help to
keep it from looking like Kodak or Qualex no longer cared about Kodachrome.

Sounds like I need to finish up my last couple of rolls of K25.  Or auction
it to the highest bidder!

Juts send it through any dealer. Kodachrome is processed by Qualex.

This is not true.  There are only three (or perhaps fewer by now)
labs in the entire world that process Kodachrome: one in Japan,
Kodak in Switzerland, and Dwayne's Photo in Kansas.  If you send
your Kodachrome film anywhere else you are only incurring increased
charges, increased delays, and increased chances for errors in handling.
Kodak shut down and dismantled its entire facility in New Jersey around
the beginning of September.

Dwayne's order form is available at:

Does that mean that the last remaining address I have for my Kodak Pre-paid
processing mailers is no longer valid?

I can't confirm it for Qualex retail partners, but I can confirm it for
the Qualex ("Kodak") pre-paid mailers. I've sent several rolls of
Kodachrome off in these and gotten them back. It takes a long time,
though; probably better to send it directly to Dwayne's, at least if
speed is important to you. (They've got an order form somewhere on their
Web site, http://www.k-14movies.com.)

This is for 35mm, and I believe movie film formats. AFAIK, there's no way
to get medium format Kodachrome processed any more.

Freeze it and sell it in a couple of years. I bet the price will go up.

You CAN take your Kodachrome film to any Kodak dealer for processing.  The
film simply gets sent through the Kodak system to Dwayne's for processing,
and then back through the Kodak system to your dealer.  This causes a delay
and potential loss of your film.  Unless you already have Kodak mailers, I'd
advise dealing directly with Dwayne's and simplify the process.

Kodak's website still lists Fair Lawn, NJ as a Kodachrome lab.  Is this
wrong?

The lab is supposed to close down entirely in September. I understand
that last Kodachrome was processed at the end of August. It appears the
real estate under the building has more value than the processing
service.

K25 is discon (but can still be processed).
K64 and K200 are still being sold by Kodak
http://tinyurl.com/6a3c5

Processing centers have shut down and only a couple are left in
North America.  eg: Toronto used to have a center, that work is
now shipped to New Jersey (I'm told).

No idea about Oz or Asia.

Some have reported quality issues with the remaining ctrs.

G'luck.

I talked to kodak tody. Kodachrome is no longer available in Oz !Lack
of sales is to blame, thanks to pros switching to digital. Magazines
used to use heaps of kodachrome before digital.
Completely discontinued. Lookout other countries!
