I just bought an olympus mju-ii (stylus epic) that i totally love
(delivered today). I haven't used it yet but look forward to. This is
now my only film camera, (I also bought a konicaminolta dimage x21
digital camera on same day). It was essential to me that both cameras
were small.
Both cameras are pocketable and i am wanting to get into snapshooting,
where i care most about content and composition. I had extensive
photographic experience in the 1980s when it was my main hobby and i
owned 2 SLRs, so i'm familiar with the basic concepts, but had a
decade-long hiatus away from taking pictures. I will be using the
dimage x21 with a 2300mah rechargeable battery and a 512mb SD card for
taking as many pictures as i want. For some pictures though where i
feel i may want a higher resolution or better quality than the 2mp
1600x1200 of the dimage, i will use the 35mm mju-ii. I may also use
the mju-ii regardless of how i use the dimage.
Therefore, i need an all-round film for the mju-ii that produces the
best quality, 'cos that's what i'll be using the oly for (pocketable
quality, i will not carry an SLR or hordes of film for specific
situations). I may take outdoor images of landscape and buildings in
one shot, or indoor images of patterns and lights/shadows in the one
that follows; as the camera will be in my pocket, it's uncertain what
i'll take a snapshot of, just simply whatever appeals to me.
Which film would you recommend? (please name brand and model)
Thanks.

For "all around film", i would suggest a 400 ISO film as 4x6" prints
were quite grainy from Fuji Xtra 800 and/or Kodak film(s).
If you will most often be doing low light photography, 800 ISO film
is the obvious choice, of course.
Mind that The Epic has f/2.8 lens and spot focus/meter
functionality, purposely using a 200 ISO (possibly w/ flash) can
produce soothing blurred background.
Prints from Agfa Vista 400 produced pleasingly saturated colors when
properly exposed.
My favourite film so far has been Fuji 400 NPH. Locally, it is
quite expensive and hard to find in comparison to Fuji Xtra &
Super-HQ and Kodak (Max) Gold family of films.
I have 4 rolls of Kodak Portra 400NC in fridge; lately i have been
trying store-brand 100 & 200 ISO films.
I am missing my now lost black Epic as i read recent discussions
about the lovely camera. :-.(

Mike,
I like to use Fuji Superia 400 in my Epic (and other cameras). I have
an 11x14 on my wall right now from the camera that's just excellent
:-). Another favorite is a night canal shot from Amsterdam where the
spot meter was invaluable in making the photograph.
I also like Kodak Supra UC400 when looking for a little more punch.
It's a great camera and the 400 iso film also helps extend the range
of the flash a bit.
One of real benefits of this camera and film are it's ability to
extend photography into the available light realm. For daylight work,
Fuji Superia 200 is also an excellent print film with a bit finer
grain. However at the 4x6 size the grain difference is not
objectionable.
Good luck
Regards,
Roger
