I have used Corel Photopaint for probably twenty years and have a
large number of photographs in the Corel Photopaint format *.CPT.

Over the last few years Corel has only made the upgrade available as
part of the Corel Graphics suite. This includes Corel Draw, Corel Scan
and many other items of software for which I have no use. For this
reason I've been looking at alternative image processing/editing
software. However, I've run into the problem of file compatability.

Its not surprising that Adobe does/will not recognise the *.CPT file
format but, to my surprise, I have found that Corel Paintshop Pro does
not reconise them either. So what do I do? I have a large number of
*.CPT files which I would like to be able to carry forward. I could of
course just save them as JPG or TIFF files but that way I lose all my
masks and layers etc.

I would be very grateful if someone could tell me a way out of my
bind, assuming that there is a way out of it at all.

IrfanView handles *.CPT files, and does batch conversion.  I don’t
know if it will keep layers intact.

But it is free so you might as well try and see what it does.

Many thanks. I will have a look at it.

Nope. That doesn't work. The file list in Irfanview claims it will
open *.CPT version 6. My now slightly aging version is 12. Irfanview
tells me it can neither read nor even recognise the file header  :-(

According to Michael Cervantes, you only need to save the files as
Photoshop PSD files and Photoshop will open them.

It took all of 45 seconds to discover this gem of wisdom. Maybe it's
like the last question about protecting your image? You know more than
everyone else but ask anyway!

I feel stupid. I would have sworn this was not a possibility. I will
have to try it and see if Photoshop will open the PSD files.

It looks as though my path is from CPT => PSD => Paint Shop Pro

Many thanks for jarring the rust from my brain.
